Alphabet/Google (Anthropic stake + TPUs)
Sundar Pichai (CEO); Anthropic stake is a corporate strategic investment, TPU buildout via Google Cloud.
Alphabet plays both sides of the AI trade: an ~14% stake in Anthropic (~$135B) — a hedge against its own Gemini effort — and ownership of the TPU silicon stack that Anthropic is now contractually committed to. The April 2026 deal locks Anthropic into $200B of Google Cloud/TPU spend over five years and 5GW of dedicated TPU capacity, turning the equity stake into a multi-year compute-revenue annuity.

Top holdings
~14% (~$135B) — Google has invested since 2023 (>$3B prior); April 24, 2026 deal commits up to $40B more (cash + compute) at $350B post-money.
5GW / $200B over 5yr — Anthropic committed $200B to Google Cloud + TPU over five years and reserved 5GW of TPU compute — the revenue payoff of the stake.
Recent moves
April 24, 2026: committed up to $40B in Anthropic (cash + compute), Anthropic post-money $350B; locked 5GW dedicated TPU capacity and a $200B/5yr Anthropic cloud+TPU commitment. Same week as Amazon's expanded Anthropic deal — Anthropic now sits on ~$65B pledged equity + 10GW reserved training power. Sources: TechCrunch, The Motley Fool, Trending Topics.

Our take
The most strategically elegant of the corporate bets: Alphabet captures Anthropic's equity upside AND sells it the TPUs to train on, vertically integrating the AI-trade value chain inside one P&L. Edge: owns the silicon, so the compute spend is high-margin internal revenue, not a cash outflow to Nvidia. Caveats: the ~$135B mark is an estimate off a private round; the stake is a minority position with no control; and funding a direct Gemini competitor is a genuine strategic tension, not just diversification.
The mechanism deserves more scrutiny than the elegance.
Alphabet supplies capital and compute credits; Anthropic spends them on Google Cloud; that lands as Cloud revenue; the spend-driven scale supports the next round; the round marks Alphabet's stake up through the income statement. One dollar, three appearances. Tax consultant Robert Willens put it plainly to Fortune: Alphabet can "control or influence the value of one of their own assets." April is the cleanest illustration — Alphabet put $10B in at roughly $350B in late April; the Series H priced at $965B five weeks later, re-marking the entire stake. A ~2.8x markup on a five-week-old check, and it flowed to EPS. The position sits under measurement-alternative accounting: carried at cost, remeasured only on observable transactions Alphabet participates in. It runs in reverse too. A down round marks the book down through earnings in the same quarter Anthropic's cloud spend would be slowing — the equity and revenue legs are correlated, not diversifying.
Thesis
Alphabet is the rare AI-trade participant that books the same dollar twice — once as Google Cloud revenue, again as an equity markup on the customer spending it. The Anthropic stake (~14% by press estimate, implying roughly $135B at the May 2026 $965B Series H) plus gigawatt-scale contracted TPU capacity is the best-structured of the hyperscaler–lab arrangements disclosed to date. But roughly half of Q1 2026's record $62.6B net income was a non-cash mark on a private security whose price Alphabet itself helps set. The strategy is real; the earnings quality is not what the headline implies.
Two-sided exposure to the frontier-model race. Layer one: a minority, non-controlling ~14% Anthropic stake, extended April 24, 2026 with up to $40B — $10B upfront cash at roughly the February valuation, $30B milestone-contingent, part of the rest in compute not cash. Layer two: Google Cloud sells Anthropic the TPUs it trains on, 5GW committed over five years. Equity upside plus a compute annuity, hedging Alphabet's own Gemini effort.
- 2026-07Q2 2026 (reported 22 Jul) displaced Q1 as the record quarter: net income $112.1B, diluted EPS $9.11, of which $77.1B and $6.26/sh came from a $99.0B net gain on equity securities — 69% of profit, not half.
Assessment
- Owning the silicon means Anthropic's training spend lands as high-margin internal Cloud revenue, not a cash transfer to Nvidia — monetizing the race whoever wins it.
- The hedge logic is genuinely sound: if Gemini loses the frontier, Alphabet still captures Claude's economics through both equity and TPU rental.
- Structure is more disciplined than the headline — only $10B of the $40B is committed cash; $30B is milestone-contingent and part of the rest is compute, not capital.
- Anthropic's confidential IPO filing (June 2026) creates a near-term path from a mark-to-model position to a third-party-priced marketable security.
- Circular value creation: Alphabet funds the customer, sells it compute, and books an equity gain when that spending drives the next round. The same dollar surfaces as revenue and as profit.
- ~$28.7B of Alphabet's record $62.6B Q1 2026 net income was a non-cash Anthropic markup. Nearly half a record quarter carried no cash and no operating performance behind it.
- The mark is set by rounds Alphabet participates in, not an arm's-length market. Measurement-alternative accounting converts a negotiated private price directly into GAAP earnings.
- No exclusivity and no control. Minority stake, no board control; Anthropic took $5B from Amazon in the same Series H and runs Trainium alongside TPUs.
- 5GW of dedicated capacity is real, up-front, depreciating capex committed against a single counterparty whose cash burn still vastly exceeds its revenue.
- 2026-07The Q2 gain cannot be assigned to Anthropic alone: the release discloses only a combined $99.0B net gain on equity securities, reported as primarily Anthropic and SpaceX, with the split undisclosed.
- 2026-07The buildout stopped being prospective on 22 Jul: FY26 capex guidance rose to $195–205B from $180–190B, Q2 free cash flow turned negative at -$5.86B (from +$10.1B in Q1), and the shares fell ~5–7% on the print.
Record
No standalone return is disclosed — this is a private, mark-to-model position, not a fund with a track record. Disclosed: Q1 2026 other income showed a $37.7B net gain, driven by $36.9B of net unrealized gains on non-marketable equity securities, adding $28.7B to net income and $2.35 to diluted EPS; $101.3B was carried under the measurement alternative at March 31, 2026, of ~$106.9B total non-marketable (up from $68.7B at year-end 2025). Amazon booked $16.8B on the same underlying asset. Attribution matters: this is not operating skill, it is a valuation event on a private security Alphabet helped price. On paper the trade is spectacular — a $10B April check at roughly $350B was worth about 2.8x by late May. But nothing has been realized. Until an IPO or secondary sale, the return is an accounting entry that reverses through the same mechanism that created it.
Risks & fit
- Down-round reflexivity: a lower Anthropic mark hits reported earnings and Cloud revenue in the same quarter. The exposures compound rather than offset.
- Earnings-quality repricing — the market may begin discounting Alphabet's equity gains, or stripping them out of the multiple entirely.
- IPO price discovery could land below the $965B private mark, forcing a visible and public write-down.
- Concentration: one private position drives a double-digit share of reported profit and a large slice of the $101.3B measurement-alternative book.
- Regulatory scrutiny of hyperscaler–model-lab tie-ups, where equity plus near-captive compute can be framed as foreclosure.
The circularity critique collapses if Anthropic IPOs at or above the $965B mark with genuine third-party price discovery, Alphabet can sell down without breaking the price, and Google Cloud discloses Anthropic-attributable revenue separately showing GAAP-positive margin independent of the equity mark. That would establish the stake as a real financial asset and the TPU contract as a real customer relationship, not two legs of one accounting loop. The filing was confidential as of June 2026, so this is testable within quarters — an unusually short falsification window.
Analytical framing only — Alphabet is a public operating company, not an allocatable fund, and the Anthropic stake is not separately investable. Most useful to readers modelling Alphabet's earnings quality: anyone who needs to separate operating cash generation from non-cash equity marks before applying a multiple, or who wants to understand how hyperscaler–model-lab vendor-financing loops flow through a GAAP income statement. Not a view on the security.
No management or performance fee — a balance-sheet position, not a fund. The real cost sits elsewhere: compute credits given as investment consideration compress Cloud gross margin, and 5GW of dedicated capacity is up-front capex depreciated over years.
