Install skills in Gemini CLI

Gemini CLI looks for skills in .gemini/skills/ and .agents/skills/ in a project, and in ~/.gemini/skills/ and ~/.agents/skills/ for all your projects.

Where Gemini CLI looks for skills

This project

  • .gemini/skills/
  • .agents/skills/

All projects

  • ~/.gemini/skills/
  • ~/.agents/skills/

Source: geminicli.com (opens in a new tab), checked 26 Oct 2026.

Install a skill

  1. Copy the skill's folder, with its SKILL.md at the top, into .gemini/skills/ in your project, or into ~/.gemini/skills/ for all your projects.
  2. Keep the folder named exactly as the name field in its SKILL.md, as the Agent Skills spec asks.
  3. Or use the Gemini CLI tab on any skill's page here: its commands copy that skill at the commit we checked.

Watch out for

  • When .agents/skills and .gemini/skills hold skills with the same name, the .agents/skills one wins.
  • gemini skills install fetches the latest commit; it has no option to pin a version.
  • In a running session, run /skills reload to pick up a new skill.
  • Google replaced Gemini CLI with Antigravity CLI for unpaid-tier and Google One users on 18 June 2026.
