Install skills in Zed

Zed looks for skills in .agents/skills/ in a project, and in ~/.agents/skills/ for all your projects.

Where Zed looks for skills

This project

  • .agents/skills/

All projects

  • ~/.agents/skills/

Source: zed.dev (opens in a new tab), checked 26 Oct 2026.

Install a skill

  1. Copy the skill's folder, with its SKILL.md at the top, into .agents/skills/ in your project, or into ~/.agents/skills/ for all your projects.
  2. Keep the folder named exactly as the name field in its SKILL.md, as the Agent Skills spec asks.
  3. Or use the Any agent tab on any skill's page here: its commands copy that skill into .agents/skills, which Zed also reads, at the commit we checked.

What it honours

Frontmatter fields Zed reads beyond the six in the Agent Skills spec.

Watch out for

  • Each skill must sit directly in the skills folder; skills in nested folders are not found.
  • Project skills load only in a worktree you have granted trust to.
  • All skill names and descriptions share a 50 KB budget; skills past it are dropped with a warning.
  • A zed://skill link opens a pre-filled Create Skill page and writes nothing until you save it.
